Seminars:

Presenter:  Tom Kelly
Title:  Covenant Mission in Mexico:  History, Vision, Strategy
2006 is the sixtieth anniversary of the beginning of Covenant missionary work among the peoples of Latin America.  The work began in 1946, among the people of Mexico.  This seminar will review the story of Covenant mission in Mexico, and place it within the broader context of the Covenant World Mission venture.  Participants will learn about current mission vision in Mexico, and how the missionary staff is partnering with the Iglesia del Pacto de México to expand and strengthen Christ's church.

Presenter:  Eugenio Restrepo
Title:  Creative ways to reach out Spaniards for Christ
This seminar seeks to discuss creative ways to reach out to people for Christ in the 21st century--these people being characterized by tolerance, religious indifference, and competitiveness, in a developed postmodern European country.  By means of the arts, drama, sports, clowning, music, and ministry among the Gypsies, participants will learn and discuss the challenges that Spain and the Evangelical church is facing in missions to present the gospel in the context of the social, political and economic rapid changes in Spain.

Presenter:  Jon Robertson
Title:  A Toolkit for Mission
In this seminar, we will look at how an individual or a group can better prepare for a short mission trip experience.   We will look at some 'hard questions' that need to be answered, as well as address some of the nitty-gritty issues that can make or break the experience.  This seminar is for individuals or groups actively preparing for a missions trip, those who are simply considering such a trip in the future and also church leaders who would like to evaluate their on-going mission trip programs.

Presenter:  Paul Metzger
Multnomah Biblical Seminary professor, author

Title:  Eating (Jim) Crow
Jim Crow laws may be a thing of the past.  However, today we live under an updated version of segregation based on consumer preference.  Consumer culture subtly structures the way the church approaches life: we often cater to giving people what they want, when they want it, at the least cost to themselves.  Catering to base consumer appetites makes it very difficult to confront race and class divisions.  The Evangelical Christian community needs to take the lead in eating crow—humble pie.  Intentionally or unintentionally, many Evangelical churches have set up structures of church growth that foster segregation, such as appealing to consumer appetites and the like.  A change in appetites and eating habits is in order.  This talk will seek to expose consumerism’s structuring of race and class divisions and call for an all-consuming restructuring of passions, practices, and the imagination.  (This seminar will be taken from Paul Louis Metzger’s forthcoming book, “Eating (Jim) Crow: Confronting Race and Class Divisions in the Consumer Church” (William B. Eerdmans Publishing Company).

Presenter:  Special guest
Title:  From Hagar to Jesus: how a Muslim convert to Christianity feels about Jesus

The speaker shares her spiritual journey from The God who sees me Gen 16:13 to belief in Jesus as the fulfillment of Islam.

Presenter:  Andy Larsen
Title:  Christianity, Islam & the Mosiacs Project
In this workshop, we will explore many of the critical questions that face us today in Christian/Muslim relations with the goal to better understand and engage Muslims with the Gospel. We will also look at the Covenants new Mosaics project which is intended to foster opportunities for the Good News of Christ to emerge in the various Muslim immigrant communities, the marginalized unreached peoples of Europe. Many of the perspectives and insights gained in this workshop are also relevant to reaching Muslims in America.

Presenter:  Laura King (facilitator) and panel
Title:  Inside Sankofa
In November of 2005, 40 people from the North Pacific Conference journeyed to the civil rights landmarks of the 1960s in order to grapple with issues of racial injustice, reconciliation and righteousness.  “Sankofa” is a West African word meaning “looking back to go forward.”  Hear from participants about the Sankofa Journey, see pictures and find out how you can be involved in a future journey.

Presenter:  Keith Tungseth

Facilitator for Local Church Mission Initiatives, Dept. of World

Title:  Innovative Mission Partnerships

At the same time as North American churches are seeking direct

involvements in mission across international borders, we find our partner churches (in countries around the world) developing transformational holistic ministries in their own communities.  These partner churches are also crossing international borders to share the Good News.  We have much to learn from our sisters and brothers in other countries and are discovering innovative ways to partner with them.  Alberto and Lisa Zepeda will participate in this seminar to give a perspective informed by Chilean, Canadian and Kenyan cultures.  The Zepedas have been active in compassionate ministries in Edmonton, Alberta before being called to be Covenant Short-term missionaries in Kenya.

Presenter:  Kazi Joshua

Title:  Doing Justice Ministry
How can we live out Micah 6:8 in this day and age in the Church?  Explore the meaning of Justice Ministry as compared to compassion and mercy. Explore the biblical grounds for such a ministry and look at examples of where this sort of ministry is going on. We will also give time to talk specifically about situations where people are considering starting such a ministry or want to build on what they already have.

Presenter:  John Perkins

Title:  Youth Seminar
This is a special seminar for youth (students and youth leaders) with John Perkins.  Hear John’s story and have a chance to ask him questions about his ministry of community development and reconciliation.

Check back for more seminars—details will be posted as planning continues
